Our Mission
Step Up is the local directory that makes it easy to find opportunities to help people in your community. We believe that every person who wants to make a difference should be able to find a way to do so, and every organization that needs help should be able to connect with willing volunteers.
The Story Behind Step Up
Step Up was founded by Steven Fafel, who experienced firsthand the frustration of wanting to give back but not knowing where to start.
"I wanted to volunteer and help people in my local community," Steven recalls. "But I kept hitting the same wall—finding opportunities was incredibly difficult. There was no central place to see what was available, no easy way to connect with organizations that needed help. It felt like there should be a better way."
As Steven looked deeper into the problem, he discovered it wasn't just volunteers who were struggling. Non-profits, community organizations, and local groups were facing the opposite challenge: they desperately needed volunteers but had limited ways to reach them. Students completing service hours, professionals looking to give back, and community members wanting to make a difference were all searching—but there was no easy way to connect supply with demand.
"It became clear that this was a two-sided problem," Steven explains. "Organizations were struggling to find volunteers, and volunteers were struggling to find opportunities. The need was there on both sides—what was missing was the bridge between them."
